Intervista Agathodaimon (Sathonys)

Ciao Sathonys, benvenuto su Truemetal.it! Siamo felici di averti come ospite oggi….

1) Come mai hai usato il nome di una divinità benevola per indicare una band che suona il genere nichilista per eccellenza?

Oh beh, ci sono molteplici significati dietro il nome di Agathodaimon. Quello a cui mi riferisco tipicamente è il cosiddetto enigma dell’Agathodaimon. Un incantesimo, che porta un nome segreto o una parola magica. È contenuto in un rotolo alchemico dedicato al “sovrano Heraklius”, che probabilmente è stato scritto da un “Polyhistor” (non so come tradurre questo, mi dispiace) nel 615 d.C., Alessandria, Grecia, di nome Stephanos. In questo rotolo c’è un indovinello, che è stato tradotto in diversi modi. Non posso tradurli in inglese in modo accurato come dovrebbe essere, ma lo farò il meglio possibile. Quindi, ecco il primo esempio: “Lettere ne conto nove. Quattro sillabe sono. Ora riconoscimi/Che di tre prima, ha ciascuna due lettere/E ciò che rimane è incluso nel resto; ma cinque dovrebbe essere pronunciato senza suono/E la somma dei numeri contiene ottocento due volte/Tre volte trenta più sette dovrebbe essere aggiunto/E se sai chi sono/allora non sei non iniziato nella saggezza degli dei”. Ebbene, l’indovinello dell’Agathodaimon era recitato nello stile dell’oracolo tardo sibillino, e spesso ne è stata cercata una soluzione, ma nessuno ha mai risolto questo indovinello fino ad oggi. Oggi non si sa bene come tradurlo. Si dice che molti studiosi come Morhof, Leibniz, Borrichius, Cardanus, ecc. ci abbiano provato, ma senza successo. Per me, è un simbolo per fare l’impossibile. Come scrivere una canzone perfetta, non è possibile, ma si può comunque fare del proprio meglio e cercare di avvicinarsi il più possibile.

2) Guardando indietro alla vostra carriera, vi considerate tra i primi della scena black teutonica? Un po’ come Destruction, Sodom e Kreator per il thrash

Haha, no, certo che no. Quella è tutta un’altra storia. Queste band hanno avuto un grande impatto sulla scena, e in qualche modo sono state tra quelle che hanno inventato questo stile. Sono stati i primi. Eravamo abbastanza in anticipo, forse, allora, ma ci sono stati altri come Desaster, Martyrium e così via, che erano in giro prima di noi, e anche loro sono stati ispirati dalle band menzionate sopra, più le band dalla Scandinavia che hanno dato il via a questa ondata Black Metal. Ma non abbiamo mai pensato in queste categorie. Il mio obiettivo è sempre stato quello di creare il tipo di musica che noi stessi avremmo apprezzato, che avrebbe preso influenza da una varietà di band oscure ed estreme, e l’avrebbe mescolata con i nostri ingredienti.

3) Cosa vi ha spinto a tornare sulla scena dopo 9 anni di silenzio? E perché hai deciso di prenderti questa “pausa” in quel momento?

È stato semplicemente il fatto che ho dovuto concentrarmi sulla mia famiglia per alcuni anni, e non volevo che gli Agathodaimon avessero un ruolo secondario. Ho messo troppa energia e tempo nella band per portarla avanti come una specie di hobby senza importanza. Ho pensato che fosse meglio prendersi una pausa completa, prestare attenzione alla famiglia e ai bambini, e poi ricominciare come si deve una volta che avremmo potuto concentrarci di nuovo sulla band. Non è mai stato pianificato di lasciare la band per sempre, ma ho anche pensato che sarebbe stato forse 5-6 anni, ma le cose sono complicate, e abbiamo dovuto cercare nuovi musicisti, poi assicurarci che la lineup fosse stabile e che lì ci fosse chimica, e come se non bastasse, questa strana situazione pandemica…

4) La situazione pandemica ha influenzato la scrittura del disco? (sia concettualmente che all’atto pratico)? Inoltre, la decisione di pubblicare un album dopo tanti anni di silenzio potrebbe essere un’arma a doppio taglio, data l’incertezza di promuoverlo in tour?

Beh, abbiamo annunciato la reunion nel 2020, dopo esserci assicurati un contratto discografico, organizzato le prime apparizioni ai festival… e poi tutto si è fermato di nuovo. È stato estenuante, deprimente. E chissà come si svilupperà la cosa, forse un’altra variante del virus salterà fuori all’improvviso. Quindi non volevamo aspettare oltre, se ci saranno o meno dei concerti.

5) Questa situazione pandemica costringerà la produzione musicale a una dimensione “studio only”?

Alcuni paesi hanno già riaperto, e non credo che possiamo attenerci alla tattica del “tutti devono stare a casa”. La vita deve andare avanti in un modo o nell’altro. Inoltre, suonare dal vivo è il mio strumento principale per gestire una band, è l’aspetto migliore.

6) Tra i molti temi toccati nell’album c’è quello della solitudine, vista come una punizione, ma anche come una risorsa. Deriva da una lettura della società moderna, sempre più isolata o dalla reclusione pandemica?

La pandemia non ha avuto molta influenza sulla musica o sui testi. Parlando di solitudine, è piuttosto che mi considero una persona un po’ depressa. Cerco di vedere le cose buone della vita, ma ci sono molte cose che ti trascinano giù, cose che desideri e che non possono essere raggiunte, cose su cui sembra che tu non possa influire. Avere la musica mi aiuta ad affrontare questi sentimenti.

7) Ovviamente l’interiorità della tua musica non si ferma qui: anche gli istinti più intimi, che possono darci piacere, devono essere seguiti. Seguire la primordialità dentro di noi può essere un’ancora di salvezza?

Beh, la nostra società è un po’ strana in questi aspetti. Da un lato, c’è “intimità” in modi strani, un sacco di porno, una ragazza su due sembra gestire la propria pagina di only fans, ma dall’altro lato, la sessualità è ancora qualcosa che deve essere relegato ad un universo parallelo. Tante cose strane… se guardate YouTube, troverete un sacco di violenza, ma una volta che c’è un capezzolo visibile, sarà censurato. È pazzesco che la sessualità sia un tale tabù, anche se ogni essere umano è un essere sessuale, ma questo aspetto del nostro carattere, questi istinti devono essere tenuti segreti e sono sottoposti a regole severe.

8) Viene anche menzionata una divinità, “Mammon”, che personifica l’arricchimento disonesto: cosa ha ispirato questa metafora?

Beh, “The seven” riguarda i sette peccati capitali, e l’avidità è uno di questi. L’umanità è avida, molto spesso il denaro è più importante delle vite umane. Basta guardare l’Ucraina in questo momento, stiamo cercando di sanzionare Putin, ma la Germania sta avendo difficoltà a decidere se dovremmo smettere di comprare gas o petrolio da lui, perché questo significherebbe conseguenze negative da parte nostra, mentre la gente in Ucraina sta morendo. Questo è strano e imbarazzante. Stiamo sacrificando questo pianeta e le vite su di esso per il profitto di poche persone… guardando il cambiamento climatico ecc.

9) E’ molto interessante il modo in cui guardate all’interno dello spirito umano in questo album, l’amore e il possesso da e di qualcun altro non sono temi molto battuti nel black metal (come nei testi di “Estrangement” e “In my dreams pt.2“), come mai avete deciso di parlarne?

Beh, non pensiamo se possiamo parlare di questo o quello. Ho spesso avuto sfondi molto personali in alcuni testi, anche se probabilmente non è sempre ovvio. Sembra più naturale scrivere dei tuoi sentimenti ed esperienze, cose che hanno o hanno avuto un impatto su di te, più facile che scrivere di demoni o altro.

10) In questo album si possono sentire influenze di vario genere (thrash, heavy, power) quali artisti o album hanno portato a questa scelta stilistica?

Ah, difficile da dire. Dato che il nostro nuovo chitarrista Nakhateth ha avuto una grande influenza sulle nuove canzoni, iniziamo con alcune delle sue influenze non-Black Metal. Gli piace molto il thrash degli anni ’80, come i Megadeth o i Coroner, e anche alcune band di nicchia come i Pentagram. Abbiamo molto in comune su questo. Gli piace anche il Power Metal, mentre io preferisco un po’ di Heavy Metal tradizionale come gli Iron Maiden, ma non vedrei questo tipo di stile qui. Nelle sue chitarre soliste forse, Nakhateth ha contribuito con alcuni bei soli. Dovreste controllare il suo canale YouTube sotto il suo altro nome d’artista Ristridi, dove fa molti video di playthrough.

11) Nello sviluppo del vostro stile personale avete avuto qualche influenza particolare all’inizio della vostra carriera?

Abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio per non copiare le band. Naturalmente ci sono somiglianze a livello subconscio che probabilmente non puoi evitare, ma se un riff suona troppo simile a qualcosa che già esiste, di solito lo abbandoniamo. Ma le band che amavo veramente in quel periodo erano Morbid Angel, Emperor, Autopsy, The Doors, Samael, Overkill, Slayer e Celtic Frost.

12) Avete in programma possibili date dal vivo?

Beh, suoneremo al Club SchonSchön a Mainz, il 02.04.2022 e un concerto/release show con i nostri amici The Spirit, il 29.04.2022 a Saarbrücken. Ci sarà uno show da headliner al Mahlstrom Open Air, il 16.07.2022 e speriamo che il Ragnarök Festival di quest’anno non venga cancellato di nuovo, dovrebbe avere luogo il 22./23.04.2022. Più tardi nell’anno, torneremo in Romania al Metal Gates Festival, 14.-16.10.2022. Altro a venire!

13) Tra pandemia e possibile terza guerra mondiale, pensi che non potremo mai tornare alla normalità?

La normalità è solo ciò che sembra normale nel momento in cui stai vivendo. Forse tra qualche anno sarà normale indossare sempre la mascherina e vaccinarsi una volta al mese. Vediamo!

1. How come you used the name of a benevolent deity to indicate a band that plays the nihilist genre par excellence?

Oh well, there are multiple meanings behind the name of Agathodaimon. The one I typically refer to is the so-called riddle of the Agathodaimon. A spell, which delivers a secret name or magic word. It is contained in an alchemistic scroll dedicated to “ruler Heraklius”, which probably was written by a “Polyhistor” (don’t know how to translate this, sorry) in 615 A.C., Alexandria, Greece, named Stephanos. In this scroll, there’s a riddle embedded, which was translated in several ways. I can’t translate them into english as accurate as it should be, but I’ll do it as good as possible. So, here’s the first example: “Letters I count nine. Four syllables I am. Now recognize me/Which one of three first, has each one two letters/And what remains is included in the rest; but five should be spoken without sound/And the sum of numbers contains eight hundred two times/Three times thirty plus seven should be added/And if you know who I am/Then you are not uninitiated into the wisdom of the gods.” Well, the riddle of the Agathodaimon was held in the style of the late sybillinic oracle, and it was often tried, but no one ever solved this riddle until now. Nowadays, it isn’t really sure how to translate it. It is said that many scholars like Morhof, Leibniz, Borrichius, Cardanus, etc. tried, but failed. To me, it’s a symbol to do the impossible. Like writing a perfect song, it’s not possible, but you can do your best nevertheless and try to get as close as possible.

2. Looking back at your career, do you consider yourselves among the prime comers of the teutonic black scene? A bit like Destruction, Sodom and Kreator for thrash

Haha, no, of course not. That’s a whole different story. These bands did have a big impact to the scene, and somehow were amongst the ones to invent this style. They were the first ones. We were quite early maybe back then, but there have been others like Desaster, Martyrium and so on, that were around before us, and even they were inspired by the bands mentioned above, plus the bands from Scandinavia that kicked off this Black Metal wave. But we never thought in such categories. My aim always was to create the kind of music we ourselves would enjoy, that would take influence from a variety of dark and extreme bands, and mix it with our own ingredients.

3. What pushed you to come back on the scene after 9 years of silence? And why did you decide to take this “break” at the time?

It was simply the fact that I had to focus on my family for some years, and didn’t want Agathodaimon to play a “second role”. I put too much energy and time into the band to just keep it going as some kind of unimportant hobby. I thought it’s better to take a full break, pay attention to family and kids, and then have a proper start once we could focus on the band again. It was never planned to quit the band forever, but I also thought it would be maybe 5-6 years, but things are complicated, and we had to look out for new musicians, then make sure the lineup is stable and the chemistry is there, and then on top, this weird pandemic situation…

4. Did the pandemic situation influence the writing of the record? (both conceptually and practically)? Also, could the decision to release an album after so many years of silence be a double-edged sword, given the uncertainty of promoting it on tour?

Well, we announced the reunion in 2020, after we just secured a record deal, arranged the first festival appearances… and then all was brought to a full stop again. It was exhausting, depressing. And who knows how this will develop, maybe another virus variant will pop up all of a sudden. So we didn’t want to wait any further, whether there are gonna be concerts or not.

5. Will this pandemic situation force music production to a “studio only” dimension?

Some countries already opened up again, and I don’t think we can stick to “everyone has to stay at home”-tactics. Life has to go on one way or another. Plus, playing live is my main driver for running a band, it’s the best aspect of it.

6. Among the many themes touched on in the album is that of solitude, seen as a punishment, but also as a resource. Does it derive from a reading of modern society, more and more isolated or from pandemic reclusion?

The pandemic didn’t have so much influence on the music or lyrics. Speaking about solitude, it’s rather that I’d consider myself a somewhat depressive person. I try to see the good things in life, but there are many things that drag you down, things you’re longing for that can’t be reached, things you seem not able to influence. Having the music helps me to cope with these feelings.

7. Obviously, the interiority of your music doesn’t stop here: the most intimate instincts, which can give us pleasure, must also be followed. Can following the primordiality inside us be a lifeline?

Well, our society is a bit weird in these aspects. On one hand, there’s “intimacy” in weird ways, lots of porn, every 2^nd girl seems to run their own onlyfans-page, but on the other hand, sexuality is still something that has to be squeezed into a parallel universe. So many weird things… if you look at YouTube, you’ll find a lot of violence, but once there’s a nipple visible, it’ll be censored. That’s just crazy, that sexuality is such a taboo, even though every human being is a sexual being, but this aspect of our character, these instincts should be kept a secret and are put under strict rules.

8) A deity is also mentioned, “Mammon”, who personifies dishonest enrichment: what inspired this metaphor?

Well, THE SEVEN is about the seven deadly sins, and Greed is one of them. Humanity is greedy, very often money is more important than human lives. Just look at the Ukraine right now, we’re trying to sanction Putin, but Germany is having a hard time to decide whether we should stop buying gas or oil from him, as this would mean negative consequences on our end, while people in the Ukraine are dying. That’s just weird, and embarrassing. We’re sacrificing this planet and the lives on it for the profit of a few people… looking at climate change etc.

9) It’s very interesting the way you look inside the human spirit in this album, love and possession by and of someone else are not very beaten themes in black metal (as in the lyrics of “Estrangement” and “In my dreams pt.2”), how come you decided to talk about it?

Well, we don’t think about whether we can talk about this or that. I’ve often had very personal backgrounds in some lyrics, even though it’s probably not always obvious. It feels more natural to write about your feelings and experiences, things that do or did have an impact on you, easier than writing about demons or whatever.

10) In this album you can hear influences of various kinds (thrash, heavy, power) which artists or albums have led to this stylistic choice?

Ha, hard to say. As our new guitarist Nakhateth had a big influence on the new songs, let’s start with some of his non-Black Metal influences. He’s very much into 80ies Thrash, like Megadeth or Coroner, and even some rather niche bands like Pentagram. We do have a lot in common there. He also likes Power Metal, while I rather enjoy some traditional Heavy Metal like Iron Maiden, but I wouldn’t see this kind of style here. In his lead guitars maybe, Nakhateth contributed some nice soli. You should check out his YouTube-channel under his other artist name Ristridi, where he does a lot of playthrough videos.

11) In the development of your personal style did you have any particular influences at the beginning of your career?

We tried our best not to copy bands. Of course there are similarities on subconscious level that you probably can’t avoid, but if a riff sounds too similar to something that already exists, we typically drop it. But, bands that I really loved at that time were Morbid Angel, Emperor, Autopsy, The Doors, Samael, Overkill, Slayer and Celtic Frost.

12) Do you have in your plans possible live dates?

Well, we’ll play Club SchonSchön in Mainz, 02.04.2022 and a gig/release show with our buddies The Spirit, 29.04.2022 in Saarbrücken. There’ll be a Headliner show at the Mahlstrom Open Air, 16.07.2022 and we hope this year’s Ragnarök Festival won’t be cancelled again, should take place 22./23.04.2022. Later in the year, we’ll return to Romania to Metal Gates Festival, 14.-16.10.2022. More to come!

13) Between pandemic and possible third world war, do you think we can never go back to normality?

Normal is just what seems normal at the time you’re living. Maybe in a few years it will be normal to always wear your facemask and get vaccinated once a month. Let’s see!
